Collection Catalogue 2022/24 With our deep understanding of materials, coupled with fine Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship, we’ve been making long-life furniture that honours and celebrates nature without taking it for granted for over half a century. From Hokkaido with care & respect

From Hokkaido with care & respect The CondeHouse story is one of nature, place and a steadfast commitment to quality craftsmanship. Our solid-wood products, produced on the forest-rich Japanese island of Hokkaido – the country’s traditional furniture-making centre – are a kind of ‘second nature’, where timeless design and locally drawn production and artisanal expertise ensure the fullest expression of living materials in finished chairs and tables that last a lifetime. This catalogue features an edit of our most iconic pieces, all of which consciously go against the grain of fleeting design trends – instead marrying the ageless beauty of natural wood grain with pared-down forms authored by the likes of celebrated designers Naoto Fukasawa, Nendo, Peter Maly and Michael Schneider. Their visual ease and rich haptic quality make them equally at home in an array of residential and contract settings the world over. But, wherever they go, they always take with them the essence of Hokkaido.

Collection Catalogue 2022/24 Materials and Sustainability In combining a judicious material selection with traditional handcraft and computer-aided production technology, we’ve succeeded at CondeHouse in creating furniture that not only uses and respects the stuff of nature, it allows it to live on in a new form.

From Hokkaido with care & respect With each piece taking weeks to complete, it's made to last a lifetime. Or, rather, three lifetimes – materially, constructionally and in terms of its design. We’re definitely not in the obsolescence game. Sustainability is built into the enduring visual and tactile longevity of all of our products. What’s more, we’ve been planting oak trees on our own land since the turn of the millennium in an attempt to replace the natural resources we use. ‘The nature of Hokkaido is the very DNA of the CondeHouse brand,’ is how our company president Noriyoshi Someya puts it. We’re ever-conscious of the amount of materials we use, too, in both our solid-wood and veneer construction. Our bent wood, for example, comprises strips of veneer laminated together and shaped in large presses, rather than steam-bent, resulting in the most efficient use of every tree. 18 KORENTO Armchair Mikko Halonen Japanese Oak – from the northern island of Hokkaido – is the material starting point for award-winning Finnish designer Mikko Halonen’s latest collaboration with CondeHouse – the KORENTO Armchair. With the backrest, armrests and legs articulated as one continuous, flowing element, it presents a harmonious visual proposition that is matched by the level of comfort it provides. Its clever construction means that the seat element appears delicately balanced on the chair’s frame. This is a strongly architectural design that’s designed and built to stand the test of time. 20 SPLINTER Armchair Nendo Celebrated Japanese studio Nendo – founded by Oki Sato in 2005 – is known for its minimalist designs, whose reduction belies the consideration and innovation they reflect. The Splinter Armchair, which comes in three versions – wood seat, upholstered seat, and full shell – is no exception. ‘We splintered each piece of wood as though peeling it away,’ says the designer, resulting in backrests that elegantly divide to become both armrests and legs, and create a harmonious whole. Respecting the material, Nendo went with the grain, so that the wood would retain its original pliancy. Collection Catalogue 2022/24

KOTAN Chair Naoto Fukasawa The latest design to emerge from CondeHouse’s ongoing collaboration with internationally acclaimed designer Naoto Fukasawa, KOTAN is a light, literally light, yet materially robust and stackable chair that is built to last. KOTAN utilises Japanese Ash and leather or fabric upholstery to create a pared-down yet friendly form that fits perfectly into both residential and contract contexts, in particular hospitality settings like restaurants and cafés. Sustainability is key here: minimal material usage and a design language that transcends trends make for a long-life product. Collection Catalogue 2022/24

SAN Chair Michael Schneider A minimal material usage delivers an impressive spatial articulation in Berlin designer Michael Schneider’s latest collaboration with CondeHouse. SAN – which means three in Japanese – derives its name from the intersection of the three key elements that go to make up its form: its front and back legs, and its elegantly curved backrest. With both upholstered seat and back, SAN – made from Japanese Birch – creates an ultracomfortable space for the user to sit into while maintaining a pared-down silhouette that makes its introduction into both commercial and private settings a harmonious one. Its solid Japanese Oak top – which rests on a column-like base – is almost 1.5 inches thick, yet possesses a supreme softness thanks to its expertly milled and sanded round edge. The robustness of the table base, meanwhile, gently tapers, to soften its monolithic appearance, with a rounded finish at its very bottom to create a small sense of optical lightness – and to protect toes from stubbing!
