Gunter Koenig was born in 1957 in Hamburg, Germany. After an apprenticeship as a furniture maker, he set up his own studio for furniture design and production in 1990 and has been designing and producing a diverse range of furniture for living spaces for over 30 years. His designs are always based on modern craftsmanship and balanced elegance, without being influenced by trends.

The design is in several museums' collections and in the collections of prominent private collectors, including Robert Wilson in New York, and when production began at Kandi House in 1994, the reputation grew even further, with the stool “Tomte” winning a silver award at the following IFDA in 1996. This design was also subsequently put into production at Candihouse.
One of his notable achievements was his contribution to the Vitra Design Museum's “Kidsize” exhibition, which toured the world.
