For more than 100 years, these precious logs grew in the vast land of Hokkaido.
Some exceed one meter in width, and the years spent surviving harsh natural conditions are vividly expressed through bold knots and cracks, giving each piece a powerful character.
Through a rare stroke of fate, this remarkable timber arrived at our Asahikawa workshop, where it was crafted under the Ippongi craftmanship philosophy and reborn as Kai—a name that signifies a flagship. Here, the vitality of the wood and refined design come together to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
“Just because it has knots, cracks, or burls, it cannot become furniture.”
We believe that thinking this way would be an injustice to the trees that entrust their lives to us.
Just as each of our faces is different, and those differences create individuality and expression, we see what were once considered flaws as unique characteristics.
Our philosophy at Asahikawa Workshop Ippongi is to finish each piece so that the wood can express its most authentic and beautiful self.
Rather than selecting wood to fit a piece of furniture, we create furniture by honoring and bringing out the individuality and natural form of each piece of wood.
